I didn't even have my air blower on me and dust was hardly an issue. I normally edit my photos a little so I pushed the histograms around and ended up with a great scan just as sharp as the lab's noritsu with good control of the colours. I was even surprised that I could use negafix to choose the film stock. I didn't read any instructions and found it very easy to find the settings I wanted and get a nice looking scan super fast.

The install was pretty slow but once it booted. I decided finally to download the SE 9 demo and see this supposed ancient software for myself. I was looking into all sorts of workarounds and open source software. I found many suggesting Vuescan over Silverfast which was over 3 times the price, then more saying Vuescan was actually bad and to get lightroom and negative lab pro on top of that! My head was swirling at all the costs. Panic started to set in as I realised I would probably have to upgrade to Silverfast 9 and pay more money, hen I started to trawl some forums and reviews.

A copy of Silverfast 8 was included in the box however it was a CD and I have no drive. I was between the plustek scanners and aiming for a used one with infrared dust removal, however an 8100 popped up for so cheap I decided to just go with it. I recently bought a scanner since I moved country and sending film off to the lab is no longer cheap nor easy, so I decided to finally be more involved with the process. I decided to write this after reading so many harrowing comments and posts about Silverfast and juggling between DSLR scanning, a flatbed and a plustek.
